Who we are
Mary Monson Solicitors is a long established firm which specialises in Criminal Legal Defence.
Mary Monson was admitted in 1976, having earned her law degree in London. She appeared regularly throughout her early career on Granada and BBC television, taking the opportunity to highlight abuses of her clients in custody by Police in the 1980s.
She was known for defending clients alleged to have taken part in numerous shootings and violent incidents in Moss Side, Cheetham Hill and Salford during the Gang Wars of the 1980s. She represented the alleged ring leader in one of the most notorious criminal trials of the 1990s - The Strangeways Prison Riot. Her client was acquitted of murder.
More recently, she represented a 14 year old girl arrested at Manchester Airport with £1M worth of heroin. This case was reported on national television and newspapers as far as Russia and the USA. The Prosecution, after a 5 month pre-trial battle with the defence team, dropped all charges.
The firm represents people accused of any criminal offence, and employs around 30 staff. Mary trains all of our staff personally, so that all cases are prepared to her standard, and she has overall responsibility for all of the work we do.
Mary's devotion to her clients comes from an understanding of where they come from. People know that her goal is not only to be a successful leader of a firm. It is to get the job done, and do her best to make sure her clients can go home. This is a philosophy that she encourages in all the firm's staff. We treat all of our staff with respect. They are selected for the attributes of kindness, excellence in law, and a willingness to work hard for the client, and these are qualities we expect at all times.
